Choosing The Right PFD For Your Child

Choosing the right Personal Flotation Device (PFD) for your child involves selecting a vest based entirely on their current weight and the safety features required for their specific size. Never buy a life jacket for a child to "grow into," as a loose vest can dangerously ride up over their face in the water.  

1. Select the Right Size by Weight

Unlike adult PFDs which are sized by chest measurement, kids' life jackets are strictly categorized by weight groups. Look closely at the product label to match your child's weight exactly:  

Infant PFDs: Rated for babies weighing under 30 lbs.  

Child PFDs: Formulated for young kids weighing between 30 to 50 lbs (or 33–55 lbs under newer harmonized standards).  

Youth PFDs: Built for older kids weighing between 50 to 90 lbs.  

2. Look for Mandatory Safety Features

The life jacket must explicitly display a U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) or Transport Canada approval stamp. Depending on your child's size, prioritize these physical safety features:

For Infants & Toddlers (<30 lbs): You must look for an attached head support collar to keep their head upright and floating face-up. It should also include a crotch strap to stop the vest from slipping over their head, and a top grab handle so you can easily pull them out of the water.  

For Young Children (30–50 lbs): A crotch strap is still highly recommended to keep the vest secure, alongside multiple adjustable body straps to dial in a snug fit.  

For Youth (50–90 lbs): These look like miniature adult vests. They emphasize comfort and mobility for water sports while utilizing multiple side adjustments to secure the torso.  

3. Check the Fit (The "Upward Pull" Test)

Once you have the life jacket on your child, fasten all zippers, buckles, and straps tightly. Grab the vest by the shoulders and pull up firmly. If the life jacket rides up over your child’s chin or ears, it is too loose—you need to tighten the straps or try a smaller size.
